  • TAMING THE FLAME

If you only owned one cookbook, Elizabeth Karmel would recommend her first cookbook, Taming the Flame. It’s her love letter to grilling and barbecue, and because she grew up in the South, it has a Southern flavor mixed into a global palate.

The book features techniques, tips, and savory foods. It includes homemade baked goods, because her family always had two to three desserts: One was never enough, two were seldom enough, and three always seemed like the right number! My Mother's Fresh-Grated Coconut Cake is Karmel’s favorite dessert of all time! Light and moist, it’s a transcendent experience. Her sister's World's Best Apple Pie is the hands-down family favorite, and once you make it, it will be your family’s favorite too.

The book proves Karmel’s adage of “If you can eat it, you can grill it” with recipes for everything imaginable. Best of all, it’s real food and information: the secrets of a working chef and pitmaster that you can quickly learn and apply to your own cooking, indoors and out! The recipes are sophisticated, yet simple to prepare. They make a big impression on your friends and family, but they’re easy for you to cook!

  • THE COMPLETE BOOK OF FARMALL TRACTORS: EVERY MODEL 1923-1973

Through engaging text and fascinating photography, The Complete Book of Farmall Tractors preserves the story of the legendary pioneering machines in detail. The book's content is organized chronologically, and its detailed text shines a light on Farmall's long history and evolution. Beautiful images, both modern and historic, bring the story to life and thorough spec tables highlight key technical and performance specifications. The result is the ultimate reference to some of the most popular farm tractors in history.

In 1923, International Harvester revolutionized the tractor world by conceiving the Farmall brand, a revolutionary new line of all-purpose tractors designed for small- to medium-sized farms. Eventually offering an array of engine and equipment options, by the 1930s Farmalls were bestowed with letters as their model names, from the compact A, B, and C models to the larger H and M tractors. Fittingly known as the "Letter Series," the tractors were even given a streamlined design by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Not surprisingly, they went on to become some of the most widely produced and best-selling American farm tractors of all time, to be followed beginning in 1954 with the numbered Hundred Series models.

By 1947, Farmall had built over 1 million tractors. Amazingly, many are still in use today, not just as collector vehicles, but often as working farm tractors. In The Complete Book of Farmall Tractors, tractor historian Robert Pripps explores the entire range of Farmall tractors, from their inception to their final model year in 1973. Pripps includes all models, from Diesel and LPG versions to orchard tractors. Pripps also explains the evolution of Farmall lines and gives coverage to the entry-market Cub unveiled in 1947, as well as the Hundred Series, right up to the cancellation of the Farmall name in 1973.

  • FLAME IGNITION

This book is a scholarly work describing flame ignition as applied to reciprocating engines, from early experiments to later successes such as the Deutz and Crossley versions of the four stroke cycle perfected by Otto in 1876. Wayne Grenning discusses problems encountered by the early entrants into the gas engine industry, highlighting solutions discovered by the various players. He also goes into more arcane subjects like the constant pressure cycle introduced by Brayton that survives today in the gas turbine engine, to a look at toy non-compression engines produced during the same early days as their full size brethren. In eight chapters, Wayne shows details of engines built by Clerk, Sombart, Forest and others, gives technical details on the construction and operating features unique to flame ignition engines, and highlights the struggles other manufacturers endured to avoid infringing the Otto patents. The section on the four-stroke-cycle engines is by itself over 300 pages long, covering 30 different companies. It has 67 pages describing the activities of Crossley Brothers in Manchester, England and another 53 pages dedicated to Gasmotoren Fabrik Deutz from Cologne, Germany.

The book is printed in color on semi-gloss paper for enhanced picture reproduction. Book size is 8½ x 11 inches with a dust jacket.

About the Author: Wayne Grenning has been interested in engines for decades and has restored many early engines, flame ignition and otherwise, as well as creating operating scale and full size models of a variety of early flame ignition and non-compressing engines. A fixture at Coolspring during the shows, Wayne has gathered all of his knowledge together into this book as a technical and historical reference to this important chapter in internal combustion engine history.

  • NO TRAVELLER RETURNS

Louis L’Amour’s long-lost first novel, faithfully completed by his son, takes readers on a voyage into danger and violence on the high seas.

    Fate is a ship.

As the shadows of World War II gather, the SS Lichenfield is westbound across the Pacific carrying 80 thousand barrels of highly explosive naphtha. The cargo alone makes the journey perilous, with the entire crew aware that one careless moment could lead to disaster.

But yet another sort of peril haunts the Lichenfield. Even beyond their day-to-day existence, the lives of the crew are mysteriously intertwined. Though each has his own history, dreams and jealousies, longing and rage, all are connected by a deadly web of chance and circumstance.

Some are desperately fleeing the past; others chase an unknown destiny. A few are driven by the desire for adventure, while their shipmates cling to the Lichenfield as their only true home. In their hearts, these men (as well as the women and children they have left behind) carry the seeds of salvation or destruction. And all of them are bound to the fate of the vessel that carries them toward an ever-darkening horizon.

Inspired by Louis L’Amour’s own experiences as a merchant seaman, No Traveller Returns is a revelatory work by a world-renowned author … and a brilliant illustration of a writer discovering his literary voice.
